When our daughter was very young and other children told her Santa Claus wasn’t real we always told her that believing in Santa was okay. As she got older, we hinted that Santa was make believe and fun for little kids to believe. Still she continued to believe in Santa as she continued to receive gifts from him every Christmas. As she approached 16yrs old and still whole-heartedly believed in Santa we had to sit her down and have a direct talk about how he was for little children and we were playing Santa so of course her first response was a very blunt “YOU LIED TO ME!”
Ugh…we can’t win and still feel guility we were caught in an our own big lie. We have always stressed that telling the truth is the best practice and this did not help.
